Arthur Governali
June 4th, 1938 – May 10th, 2026
Arthur Governali, a man of steadfast faith and integrity, peacefully passed away on May 10, 2026, joining his Savior, Jesus Christ. Born on June 4, 1938, into a working-class family in the Bronx, New York City, Arthur carried with him the strong work ethic, humility, and deep sense of community instilled in him during his upbringing.
Arthur’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. He attended Catholic Mass daily and, on occasions when he couldn’t be there in person, he would faithfully watch it on television.
Family was the heart of Arthur’s existence, and he took great pride in being their patriarch. He married his soulmate, Barbara, in 1972, and together they celebrated 54 wonderful years. As a devoted father, he cherished his seven children: Vickie (Tom), Angela (Chris), Bill (Ann), Jessica (George), Matthew (Adrienne), his namesake, AJ (Maureen), and James (Denise). This large family brought him immense joy, along with an absolute tribe of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His greatest joy was reveling in their adventures and achievements.
Arthur’s view of family extended far beyond blood relations; it encompassed extended family, in-laws, a multitude of friends, neighbors, and colleagues. He embraced diversity, valuing individuals only for the goodness within their hearts. His beloved dogs also held a special place in his life, reciprocating the love and loyalty he offered them and bringing him great happiness.
Even in his hobbies, Arthur’s generous spirit shone through. He enjoyed cultivating vegetables and fruits in his garden, proudly sharing his bounty with friends. A gifted cook, he was renowned for his legendary barbecue ribs and pig roasts, always eager to feed a crowd. Fishing was another passion of his — more about bonding with his children than the catch itself.
Many believe that true success lies in improving the world around us. By that measure, Arthur Governali was a remarkable success, and his absence will be deeply felt.
